Indiana cottage food laws

Rules change, so always confirm with the official Indiana source.

The law: Home Based Food Products; IC 16-42-5.3

What you can sell

Non-time/temperature-control baked goods, candies, nuts, honey and traditional full-sugar high-acid fruit jams and jellies are allowed.

What you can't sell

Refrigeration-dependent foods, meat products, low-acid canned foods and oxygen-sealed acidified or fermented pickles are excluded from ordinary HBV sales.

Do you need a license or permit?

Home-based vendors are exempt from food establishment requirements. A food-handler certificate is required; current course costs were not confirmed.

Sales limits

No current dollar cap was confirmed.

Where you can sell

Direct sales to end consumers are the HBV model. Online ordering, shipping, delivery and interstate details need confirmation from the current chapter.

Label requirements

The exact current mandatory label wording and full required fields could not be confirmed from a successfully fetched substantive document. Obtain the current IDOH handbook before printing labels.

Good to know

Official search results identified the Summer 2025 IDOH handbook and 2026 statutory chapter. The statute URL returned a JavaScript shell and the handbook/FAQ fetches timed out. Some details on this page could not be fully confirmed from official sources, so check with the state agency before you sell.

Pricing your products

Knowing your real cost per item matters as much as following the law.
